How to Safely Jumpstart a Car

A flat battery can happen at the most inconvenient time — early in the morning, late at night, or just before an important journey. Knowing how to safely jump start a vehicle can help you get moving again quickly without causing damage.

At Uni Tyres Mobile Tyres Services, we provide 24/7 emergency jump start services across Hayes and surrounding areas. As a fully mobile service with no physical garage, we come to you wherever your vehicle is stranded.

Whether you are stuck in Uxbridge, Ealing, or Slough, this guide explains how to safely jump start your car.

Why Do Car Batteries Go Flat?

There are several common reasons:

  • Cold weather
  • Leaving lights or electronics on
  • Frequent short journeys
  • Battery age (typically 3–5 years)
  • Electrical faults

If you hear a clicking sound but the engine will not start, a flat battery is often the cause.

Safety First Before Jump Starting

Before attempting a jump start:

  • Switch off both vehicles completely
  • Remove ignition keys
  • Apply handbrakes
  • Wear protective gloves
  • Do not smoke or allow open flames nearby
  • Inspect the battery for cracks or leaks

Do not attempt a jump start if the battery is cracked or leaking.

What You Need

  • A set of jump leads (jumper cables)
  • A second vehicle with a working 12V battery

OR

  • A portable jump starter pack

Most UK vehicles operate on a 12V system. Always ensure voltage compatibility.

Step-by-Step: How to Safely Jump Start a Car

1️⃣ Position the Vehicles

Park the working vehicle close enough for cables to reach, but ensure the vehicles do not touch. Turn both engines off.

2️⃣ Identify the Battery Terminals

  • Positive (+) — usually red
  • Negative (-) — usually black

3️⃣ Connect the Jump Leads in the Correct Order

  1. Connect red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the flat battery.
  2. Connect the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the working battery.
  3. Connect black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the working battery.
  4. Connect the final black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the car with the flat battery (not directly to the negative terminal).

This reduces the risk of sparks near the battery.

4️⃣ Start the Working Vehicle

Let it run for a few minutes.

5️⃣ Start the Car with the Flat Battery

If it starts, allow both vehicles to run for several minutes.

If it does not start, the battery may be fully depleted or faulty.

6️⃣ Disconnect the Cables in Reverse Order

  1. Remove black clamp from metal surface
  2. Remove black clamp from working battery
  3. Remove red clamp from working battery
  4. Remove red clamp from revived battery

Ensure clamps do not touch during removal.

7️⃣ Let the Engine Run

Allow the engine to run for at least 15–20 minutes or take a drive to recharge the battery. Do not switch the engine off immediately.

When NOT to Jump Start

  • Battery is cracked or leaking
  • Strong sulphur smell
  • Electrical system faults
  • Vehicle repeatedly fails after jump start

In these cases, professional assistance is recommended.

Common Jump Starting Mistakes

  • Connecting cables in the wrong order
  • Allowing clamps to touch
  • Connecting negative cable directly to flat battery terminal
  • Attempting jump start in unsafe traffic conditions
  • Ignoring repeated battery failure
